A relaxing, simple café that offers a no-fuss menu of wraps, salads, pizza, sandwiches and, of course, the signature Mövenpick ice cream and coffee.
Location, location, location. Only metres from the beach, Café Studio is just inside Movenpick´s Karon Square resort complex. We went on Sunday and found a convenient parking spot on the beach road, where there was an attendant watching the traffic and ushering resort guests across the road to and from the beach.
We chose the comfort of air conditioning against sitting outside under the umbrellas, taking comfortable lounge-style seating with a good view of goings on outside through the expansive windows.
Whilst waiting for our drinks to arrive I checked out the premises, which comprised an outer room with lounge type seating, an inner room with more conventional seating along with a desserts display and a wall full of various types of tea. Further in there were two desktop computers and laptop plug-ins where diners could use the free Wi-Fi. In the same back room they had a small library of paperbacks that could be swapped or borrowed. Most were in European languages.
After a settling in drink, we ordered from a well thought out menu. I chose Marinated Seafood which included baby octopus, shrimps and a garden salad - all very, very fresh! It was accompanied by balsamic vinaigrette that came separately in a glass bottle with a spring seal cap that reminded me of the old green Dutch Grolsch Lager bottle, a nice touch! My partner chose a Greek Salad. Both salads were served up in cream coloured enamel saucepans with enamel green trim - unusual and a real blast-from-the-past. Our place mats were folded newspapers, another unique touch and the walls were decorated with old photos taken in Sino Chinese Phuket, all of which could be purchased.
We also shared a Pia-Diavolo Pizza with pepperoni, sausage, roast garlic, onions, jalapeño peppers and fresh basil on a thin crusty base. Absolutely delicious!
As we were mainly sunset drinkers we stuck with Perrier sparkling water with our food - but it was touch and go as we were tempted by a very impressive wine and drinks list!
Finally, and with a little room left, we opted for a Latte and a Cappuccino accompanied by a healthy helping of carrot cake with Movenpick vanilla ice cream.
The staff were attentive but not intrusive and (always appreciated) they repeated our orders clearly in English so there were no misunderstandings.
We must have spent two hours over lunch and it would have been easy to kick back with a good book or write emails and stretch it out longer. Café Studio is a great place to relax and the perfect place to laze away an afternoon, watching the world go by!
