Where to Eat in Phuket
Da Maurizio Bar Ristorante
One of my first dining experiences on Phuket was special. It was a friend who said, “If you only have one evening for dinner on Phuket, you have to come with me to Da Maurizio’s.” He was, of course, right – as good friends are supposed to be.

Owner/chef Maurizio Laureri – in the search for constant improvement (as though you can improve on perfection!) – has completely restyled his Bar Ristorante. New décor, new menu and award-winning wines.

The menu introduces an inspirational new twist to classic Italian with Rock Lobster Salad – ocean fresh rock lobster tail sautéed with bird chili, garlic and parsley served on a bed of fresh citrus fruits and Arugula or imported Beef Tenderloin Medallions Chargrilled served with melted leeks, sundried tomato grilled crostini and Gorgonzola cognac butter. Not to forget the handmade pastas including mint pappardelle with tender slow braised Lamb Ragu and wide noodles made with fresh mint and topped with Pecorino Cheese OR Tagliolini Prosciutto Asparagus, Parma Ham, sundried tomatoes and toasted pine nuts with extra virgin olive oil and Parmigiano.

Even before you try the food, you know you’ve arrived somewhere special. Few restaurants in the world can match the setting: the outdoor tables practically sit on the stunning rocks at the southern end of Kalim Bay. Subtle lighting makes the most of them, while the background sound is of gentle surf breaking. Go early for sundown aperitifs. You could well be in Italy. Maurizio’s favourite opera emanates subtly from somewhere behind you.

Don’t be surprised if you end your evening with a digestif in hand discussing the state of the world, compliments of Maurizio. But, if it’s romantic seclusion you seek, no problem. You and your partner can be the last to leave the dreamy peace of the terrace gazing at the stars.

The exclusive award-winning Italian wine list (Wine Spectator Award of Excellence 2003, 2004), complements the menu.

That one night in Phuket turned into many years. The food, the ambience, the wine – the total experience – became part of them.
